16 Quirky Things Meme
Hal tagged me a while back with this and I am just now getting around to sitting down to think of things to write. It isn't that I can't think of 16 quirky things about myself to tell you all, it is more a case of the fact that most of you know me pretty well, and finding things you didn't already know took some thinking.
I am doing this today because I have a writing assignment due tomorrow and . . .
1) while I love to write, and hope someday to be a well known, published writer who can actually say she makes money from what she writes; when it comes to homework I will do just about anything, even housework to avoid writing.
2) I am the borg child (seven of nine -- get it?) in my family. I have four older sisters and two older brothers (making me seventh, ) and a younger sister and younger brother. We are all still alive, and while we don't see each other all that often I think we all still care deeply about each other.
3) I am a font of useless knowledge, which makes me a great team member when you are playing trivial pursuit or you need a phone-a-friend on Who Wants to be a Millionaire. I attribute it to having insomnia and spending a lot of time reading or watching late night television.
4)A very good friend of mine was murdered when I was 12 years old. They never found his killer. I still have dreams about him to this day.
5) I lived in Hawaii for the summer when I was 15. My mom took us there the year after my dad died. It was a great experience and an extreme culture shock at the same time.
6) I received a Manager's letter in Wrestling from South my Senior Year. I was supposed to be a Cheer Leader, but somehow I got roped into keeping the book for the team at the meets. My book was more accurate than the scorer's table at a few of the early meets, so the coach made sit at the scorer's table and called me the Statistician and gave me a Letter for my trouble. My only regert is I never got to be in the locker room for the weigh-ins.
7) I am an introvert, and painfully shy. This will surprise a lot of people because I have forced myself to be outgoing especially since high school. I try really hard to include everyone because I know how much it hurts to feel left out.
8) I used to sing in a Jazz Acapella group. I really miss it.
9) I love ideas much more than details, which will explain why my house is usuallly a mess, and my husband is very detail oriented. Without him I would be totally lost.
10) I was engaged to mrangelmeg one month after our first date.
11) I have always wanted to try an open mike night in a comedy club.
12) I don't like to watch sports on television except good golfers and the Colts. I really don't like basketball, and can't stand auto racing.
13) I have never learned another language, much to my dismay.
14) I keep a basket with chocolates in it right beside my bed. I am a chocolatarian, it is a lifestyle choice, not an addiction.
15) I fall asleep listening to music every night.
16) I hate to cook, but have a few dishes that I know I can cook well for when company comes. If it weren't for microwaves and crock pots, my poor kids would starve.

Fill the Bookshelf Meme
You are supposed to take the list and bold the books you have read and highlight the ones you would like to read. I got this from Kitchen Madonna.
This is an interesting list for the choices that are on it and for the books that were left off of it. Why, why why so darn much Jane Austen for instance and not a single book by Morris West? Orphan Sock Week
There is considerable cyber ink being generated this week on the fun topic of Orphan Socks. We all have them, the lone (or many more than one) mateless socks that we find in our sock drawer, hamper or dryer.
Growing up in a family of eleven people, my mom had an orphan sock hamper. It was the place where mateless socks went to languish until either they found their mate or she got so sick of seeing how many orphans one family could generate before she turned them into cleaning rags or worse just pitched them out.
We in the angelmeg household have an old apple crate (I think it might be a bushel sized one, but not having grown up on a farm I could be wrong on the proportion) that holds our orphans until they befall the same fate. Except I got wise on one issue. For mr angelmeg as well as Son and heir, I always purchase exactly the same brand of sock (son and heir gets the grey variety to keep them seperate) That way rather than having to match up pairs of socks I just have to match up brands. The two men have entirely fewer socks in the orphan bin than we women who tend to wear, shall I say, more colorful varieties of sock.
When we came down to Florida five weeks ago I requested that each person only pack a few pairs of socks so I didn't think I would have a problem with orphans, and yet, somehow that first week when I did the laundry I came up with one mateless sock.
Hmmmm, there are three plausible explainations for why this happened . . .
1) beautiful autistic daughter brought an extra sock in her suitcase, just in case . . . and believe me this is a definitely plausible option.
2) the washer down here decided it was hungry for a small white sock (I have heard many legends from my mother about washers being sockivores)
or
3) the mate to this particular sock decided that it wasn't seeing enough of the Gulf Coast, and went on a little walkabout of it's own. (It could happen, as Jerry Seinfeld used to say, if you ever see a sock by the side of the road . . . it is one that didn't make it)
My dilema now is; do I keep the sock until we go home in hopes that the mate turns up, or do I pack it in and throw this poor mateless darling out right now and spare myself the mysery, knowing full well that if I do that I will be sure to find the mate pining away in beautiful autistic daughter's sock drawer back home? It is a puzzlement.

six quirks meme
Rufus, one of the Parollees fine upstanding citizens that hang out over at Korrektiv has tagged me for a meme. I am supposed to divulge six quirks about my character.
I think it is very interesting that Rufus tagged me for a meme when just a short time ago he was actually calling me out for my meme addiction. (I tried to find the post in the archives but couldn't find it, darn it)
Would this make him an enabler or my dealer? (I'm just asking?)

1) I write in a journal nearly every day. I am very picky about the kind of journal that I use though. It has to be the size of a large paperback book and have a thick spiral binding and hard front and back cover. When I find one on sale in a store for less than $5.00 I will buy it even if I have just started the one I am writing in because I store them up. I tried writing a journal on my computer and it just wasn't the same as writing with a pencil (never pen) on paper. I have all of my old journals, dating back to the year mrangelmeg and I got married sitting on a shelf in our closet in our bedroom.
2) I do not like the taste of sweet tea. Hot or cold there is something off putting to sugar added to tea. On the other hand I have no problem with sweetened coffee drinks. I greatly prefer mocha lattes for example.
3) I sleep better if I am flat on my stomach. If I am on a couch or am sitting up in a car (hopefully riding in a car, not driving) I don't sleep as soundly.
4) I have to fight the uncontrollable urge to read the last page of a book before I get to the end. The urge usually hits somewhere in the middle of the book, and from that point on it is a race to see if I can get to the end without peaking ahead to see how things turn out. I usually lose.
5) I rarely ever carry change in my purse or my pockets. I deal in bills, am handed change and at the end of the day the change goes into a box on my desk, when enough change is deposited into the box that it is full the angelbaby usually "finds" my box of change and becomes "rich" for a day or two until she can get to the store to purchase a few things.
6) I talk out loud when I read the paper (just like Bull Meecham from The Great Santini). Mrangelmeg and the kids are used to it by now but I forget when we have guests in the house and have been known to scare the angelbaby's friends when they spend the night.
I tag anyone who wants to play along. I am too tired to think of anyone in particular.

Go Theology Thursday: The Bonus Round . . . Confirmation Name Meme
This Free Form Meme comes to me from Adoro te Devote. I am supposed to tell you all how I came to discern and choose my Confirmation Name and what it has meant to me. (as I understand the meme)
I was confirmed at the age of 12 in the 7th grade. My story begins when I was very much younger though; age two or three actually. My parents were friends with another couple and our families would do things together. The children in the other family were all older than we were, and baby sat us. I can just barely remember a beautiful High School girl named Loretta, but my more solid memories of babysitters from their family were of Michael and Allen, because Loretta was in a tragic automobile accident when she was only 16 years old and died.
Fast forward ten years and I was preparing for confirmation. When it came time for us to choose a saint upon which to pattern our lives my mind kept going back to the picture of Loretta that still hung in her parents' living room. She was beautiful, and my memory of her was of a sweet singing voice, and delicate perfume. At twelve, I wanted to be just like her. I wanted to choose her name as my confirmation name to honor her memory, after all aren't we all supposed to be striving for sainthood (or so I thought in my middle school theological reasoning)?
The day came for us to tell Father which saint we had chosen for our Confirmatoin Patron. We were all of us, about 40 strong, standing against the wall of the room and Father began at one end and grilled each one of us on our choice, and then gave his approval or dissent to the catechist who marked it in her book.
When Father came to me and asked what I had chosen I timidly said "Loretta?"
"Is there a saint Loretta?" he asked, slightly perplexed.
Being the quick thinker that I was I replied "There is "Our Lady of Loretto, Isn't that close enough?"
Father thought for a moment and then with a sigh of resignation he nodded his approval to the catechist and moved on to the next person in the line. It may have been to my advantage that I was near the end of tbe long line of children, and he could see the end in sight and his release from the purgatory of this job he had undertaken. Whatever his reasoning was I was completely thankful.
I got to honor my undeclared saint, Loretta, with my confirmation. When I told her mom (her dad had passed on by then) why I had chosen the name it brought her tears of joy. During my teen years I wanted to be a credit to her memory, and there were many times that that thought kept me from making disastrous choices. Perhaps she was up in heaven guiding me along,
Many years later I would have a very long discussion with my spiritual director about all the undeclared saints in the world, spurred by this exact story. He said they were called to live a ministry of obscurity. I am sure that many of us have known saints in our lives who will never be declared saints in the formal canonization process. Their lives prove their sainthood regardless of if the church ever formally grants them the title.
The current standard for confirmation name (which is proper) is that one should be confirmed in one's baptismal name so long as it is a Christian name. Had that been true when I was 12 I would have been Margaret Mary all over again, and fighting with the good saint of the Sacred Heart for who got the title first. But that is a story that I have told before.

The funny thing is I have been seeing this one all over the net all week and wishing I would get tagged for it and darned if I wasn't already tagged and just wasn't observant enough to see the tag in the first place.

The book I am currently reading and thoroughly enjoying (and would heartily recommend) is: I Shouldn't Even Be Doing This! by Mr Bob Newhart. More than a memoir, this has snippets of some of his best bits and both onstage and backstage stories that will have you laughing out loud (so be careful where you choose to read it, as I learned when I was reading it in the waiting room at saintly daughter's neurologist's office and burst out laughing unexpectedly, scaring a poor older couple nearly to death).

Meme with no name
Thanks to Adoro te Devote and my IPod and Cell Phone I got tagged (and have something to do while I am waiting for a return call)
1. Do you wear a name tag at work? Work? I don't work anymore and no one here at home needs me to wear a nametag anymore. But when I volunteer at the Media Center at the angelbaby's elementary school I am required to wear a name tag for security purposes.
2. What kind of car do you drive? 1998 Ford Taurus Wagon (She be stylin') It is paid for and gets fairly good mileage. I like it just fine and when we have to take the whole family somewhere we all actually fit.
3. What do you order when you go to Taco Bell? I don't eat at Taco Bell
4. Have you ever had a garage sale? We had a huge one in the old house that made tons of money and we bought the kids savings bonds with the money. We had one in this house and I don't think we even made back the cost of the ad in the paper. I think it has something to do with living so far out of town.
5. What color is your iPod? white, I have had it a year and can't imagine how I ever got along without it, I fall asleep to it and I use it as a devotional and portable library not to mention all my music and comedy CD's in one place.
6. What kind of dog do you have? Chocolate Lab mixed breed pup we rescued last summer, we love her, so long as she stays outside.
7. What's for dinner tonight? I have to decide right now? I usually decide that about an hour before I start cooking, or more accurately I usually start asking the kids "Someone tell me what to cook for dinner, please?"
8. What is the last alcoholic beverage you had? A really bad glass of sangria the other night with dinnner
9. Stupidest thing you ever did with your cell phone? I had to have my phone replaced and even when I begged them not to they sent me a picture phone. I am constantly accidently taking pictures with it because I don't know how to disable the camera.
10. Last time you were sick? During the writing of my finals for Gradual School and over Thanksgiving. I had Bronchitis really bad. In fact I was so sick it took two rounds of Antibiotics to kill the bugs
11. How long is your hair? just to my chin, I am trying to grow it out so that it is all one length and shoulder length (I have had bangs for years.). We shall see.
12. Are you happy right now? I have a contentment and a joy that will never be taken away from me. Happiness is fleeting and determined by so many external things that one cannot control. This sounds so phenomenological, and existential and philosophical already. Yes.
13. What did you say last? I will wait at home for your return call. ( to the voice mail of the person I am trying to contact, and why I am playing around on the computer waiting for a return call)
14. Who came over last? A week ago we had some family friends over for dinner to watch the Colts game. What a great time that was even though the game was kind of predictable for the end of the season when they were resting the first string. Great fun for our friends though because they were from Tennessee originally so the fact that the Titans won was a plus.
15. Do you drink beer? Used to like beer and love Killians Red Ale, but ever since my wheat allergies I have had a really hard time digesting it. More's the pity
16. Have your brothers or sisters ever told you that you were adopted? Constantly, My oldest sister tells me all the time that she is the only true child and the rest of us were all adopted. (there are nine of us all told). My next older brother told me one St. Nicholas Eve that I wasn't going to get any presents in my shoe because I was adopted and St. Nicholas only sent gifts to real family members.
17. What is your favorite key chain on your keys? I have (I am not making this up) a key to heaven. I am counting on it opening the lock when I get there.
18. What did you get for graduation? mrangelmeg just gave me a day at the Spaah(masage, facial mani, pedi and lunch) for passing my Gradual School finals. I consider that a graduation gift even though I got it for Christmas. I plan to get my official Grad School class ring as my other Graduation gift.
19. Whats in your pocket? change, for some reason there is always change in my pockets. It is kind of nice when I put my coat on after not wearing it for months and reach in the pockets and find money, but I don't ever remember putting it there in the first place.
20. Who introduced you to Dane Cook? my 21 year old daughter, she thinks he is hilarious, I hope is so last year.
21. Has someone ever made you a Build-A-Bear? the angelbaby has one that she made at a Cardinals game. I don't have one, nor do I want one. But if someone wanted to make me a Hannah Moostanna, now you're talking

23. What's something fun you did today? Listened to Bob and Tom on the radio while I drove #3 Daughter to school this morning. Always makes me laugh out loud.

37. What are you going to do after this? Hopefully talk on the phone, then go to the gym to set up a personal trainer for the new year.
38. Who was the last person you went shopping with? My daughters and I went shopping for a few things the other day, nothing special. I think we went to Walmart.
39. What is your favorite fruit? anything as long as it is fresh
40. What about your favorite dessert? Chocolate, sadly because of my allergies I can't eat any dessert that has flour in it so I am very limited. I make a really good wheat free cheesecake and a pretty good wheat free turtle brownie
41. What is something you need to go shopping for? I hate to shop, so I only go when I absolutely have to go. I do have to go to the online pharmacy site and re-order perscriptions for family members this week because we have run out. Woo that will be fun.
43. What kind of car does one of your siblings drive? Ford SUV, She just got a new car after driving an old van for years and years (even longer than I drove my old van)
44. Do you like pickles? yes bot sweet and sour and I love bread and butter flavor the best but no one else in my family likes them
45. How about olives? Yes both green and black
46. What is your favorite kind of gum? pepermint flavored sugar free and I only chew it when I drive. It is an obsession with me to chew gum when I drive. If I don't have gum in the car I have to stop and buy some.
47. What is your favorite kind of juice? Simply Limeade
48. Do you have any tan lines? In the summer my most noticeable tan line is the one from my watch (on my wrist) because I never take my watch off even in the sun. I don't try to tan though so any tan I get is purely accidental
49. What hospital were you born in? St Anthony's Hospital, Rock Island IL, it no longer exists as a hospital

Meme Christmas
I got this tag from Karen Hall at Some Have Hats. I'm hoping it will help me get in the spirit:
1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? We have a long standing tradition in the angelmeg household, one night a few days before Christmas mrangelmeg and I stay up late to wrap the presents, I do most of the wrapping and he reads the paper and gives me supportive comments from the sidelines. Actually in the last few years he has been much more help with the actual wrapping than in the past, That change may have occurred right about the same time as the three gifts per child rule. We wrap most everything for the family, sometimes for friends I use gift bags,
2. Real tree or artificial? Mrangelmeg is allergic to pine tree sap (or so he tells us) so we have always had an artificial tree. We have a really nice one that looks very real and is massive, so I don't mind really. I do miss the smell of a real tree sometimes, and no matter what they try to tell you, those candles don't really smell like real trees.
3. When do you put up the tree? We used to put it up for St. Nicholas day (Dec 6) when the kids were younger because we didn't have a fireplace in the old house but that has been ten years ago. This house has two fireplaces, so we no longer need a place to leave shoes, so we try to stick to the third Sunday in Advent rule. Who am I kidding, the last few years I have been too darn tired to do any decorating until that late in the season, and have loved the fact that the church offers the decoration dispensation for me to hide behind.
4. When do you take the tree down? . I like to keep the tree up until Epiphany (Jan 6th ) sometimes it stays up a bit longer due to inertia. I will happily say it has never been up so long that we have had to change the ornaments for hearts though.
5. Do you like eggnog? I really do, but since I am the only person in my entire family that does, it doesn't make sense for me to make it or buy it at Christmas time if I am the only person who is going to drink it. If we are out somewhere and it is available I usually get some.
6. Favorite gift received as a child? One year I got the complete Treasury of Winnie the Pooh in one volume. It was the most awesome gift I had ever received and I think was the first hard cover book I ever owned. I read it from cover to cover before winter break was over. I still think A. A, Milne is an amazing storyteller, and can to this day pick up a copy (not the same one, sadly) and get lost in the hundred acre wood with Christopher Robin and his friends.
7. Do you have a nativity scene? Yes. A few, my most prized set is an Italian one that my Father-in-law and his wife bought for me one Christmas and a dear friend's husband built a wooden stable for. I love it so much that it stays on the mantle in my formal living room all years round.
8. Hardest person to buy for? Middle daughter invariably asks for something that is impossible to find without an Internet search. It is usually something I have never heard of and would never be exposed to if I didn't have the distinct pleasure of having this amazing child in my life. One year it was books by James Lileks. One year it was a DVD of The Tales of Hoffman. She might be the hardest person to buy for, but her gifts are the topic of discussion for weeks after Christmas every year.
9. Easiest person to buy for? Our son, he is happy with anything, he doesn't make demands, and this year he even offered to pay for some of his gifts (he is disabled and needed to spend down to stay within his Medicaid limit in his bank account). What mom wouldn't want a child like that.
10. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? When I was a senior in college my boss actually got me a package of underwear for Christmas. It wasn't sexy or anything it was big cotton granny panties. He said his wife picked them out, she told him that all college girls needed underwear. It was the most awkward I have ever been at a Christmas gathering in my life. Needless to say, the local homeless shelter was the recipient of a nice package of unopened women's underwear that year.
11. Mail or email Christmas cards?I used to mail Christmas cards to about 80 people, now I barely remember to email Christmas greetings to family. I did help my mother-in-law with her Christmas cards this year, does that count?
12. Favorite Christmas Movie? My cynical answer is Die Hard, but my actual answer is It's a Wonderful Life. but we do try to watch A Christmas Story at least once every Christmas. I even got mrangelmeg an ornament that looks like the leg lamp this year.
13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? I am one of those annoying people who will be walking through a store in July and see something that would be a perfect gift for a friend for next Christmas and buy it right then and there. (She says ducking the rotten fruit cake). For the family though they have to have their gift list to me by St. Nicholas day because I like to be done shopping by the week before Christmas.
14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? There was this silly snowman stocking that we passed around to each other in college each year, but that was more recycled wrapping rather than presents because each year we put in a new present. Does that count?
15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? It used to be the Knights of Columbus Strudel which is totally to die for, but since my allergies I can't even have a slice without feeling sick for the rest of the week, so I just look at it longingly now. I suppose my absolute favorite thing to eat is anything I don't have to cook or clean up after.
16. Clear lights or colored on the tree? I used to be a stickler for only white lights on my tree. The last few years we have had colored lights and I don't mind them so much anymore.
17. Favorite Christmas song?Religious: O Holy Night. Preferably by a male voice
Secular: Santa Baby (stick a sable under the tree) because it was so not about presents
18. Travel for Christmas or stay home? the closer to home the better, travel makes me jittery
19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeers? Yes. even the ones that didn't make it into the song,
20. Angel on the tree top or a star? Always an Angel. Though the kids do have a Drunken Santa who swings a lantern for the downstairs tree (he isn't meant to be drunken but he doesn't stay upright and when he swings the lantern he looks tipsy).
21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? This was a major compromise in our household when we first got married, in my childhood home we opened presents right after Christmas eve dinner so we had plenty of time to play with them before Midnight mass. Then we came home from Mass had a quick meal and went to bed and slept in on Christmas day. In mrangelmeg's childhood they opened presents on Christmas morning then went to mass came home and ate a big breakfast or whatever. We almost came to blows about when was the proper time to open gifts. Now we usually open gifts on Christmas Morning regardless of when we go to Mass. But, this year we are going to change that, because the kids are old enough to put their collective feet down and tell mrangelmeg that since we have to go to Christmas morning Mass (angelbaby is serving and I am Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion ) they want to open presents on Christmas eve so that they can sleep in an extra few minutes on Christmas Morning before they have to get up to get ready for Mass.
22. Most annoying thing about this time of year? This post should explain that.
23. What I love most about Christmas? The Incarnation. God loved us so much that he came to be with us in a way that made it possible for us to reach out and come into physical contact with the Cloud of Unknowing. But God came not in majesty but in very humble circumstances. It is this living mystery wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger that makes every other annoying hassle of this season worth the effort.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie? My cynical answer is Die Hard, but my actual answer is It's a Wonderful Life. but we do try to watch A Christmas Story at least once every Christmas. I even got mrangelmeg an ornament that looks like the leg lamp this year.
13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? I am one of those annoying people who will be walking through a store in July and see something that would be a perfect gift for a friend for next Christmas and buy it right then and there. (She says ducking the rotten fruit cake). For the family though they have to have their gift list to me by St. Nicholas day because I like to be done shopping by the week before Christmas.
14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? There was this silly snowman stocking that we passed around to each other in college each year, but that was more recycled wrapping rather than presents because each year we put in a new present. Does that count?
15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? It used to be the Knights of Columbus Strudel which is totally to die for, but since my allergies I can't even have a slice without feeling sick for the rest of the week, so I just look at it longingly now. I suppose my absolute favorite thing to eat is anything I don't have to cook or clean up after.
16. Clear lights or colored on the tree? I used to be a stickler for only white lights on my tree. The last few years we have had colored lights and I don't mind them so much anymore.
17. Favorite Christmas song?Religious: O Holy Night. Preferably by a male voice
Secular: Santa Baby (stick a sable under the tree) because it was so not about presents
18. Travel for Christmas or stay home? the closer to home the better, travel makes me jittery
19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeers? Yes. even the ones that didn't make it into the song,
20. Angel on the tree top or a star? Always an Angel. Though the kids do have a Drunken Santa who swings a lantern for the downstairs tree (he isn't meant to be drunken but he doesn't stay upright and when he swings the lantern he looks tipsy).
21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? This was a major compromise in our household when we first got married, in my childhood home we opened presents right after Christmas eve dinner so we had plenty of time to play with them before Midnight mass. Then we came home from Mass had a quick meal and went to bed and slept in on Christmas day. In mrangelmeg's childhood they opened presents on Christmas morning then went to mass came home and ate a big breakfast or whatever. We almost came to blows about when was the proper time to open gifts. Now we usually open gifts on Christmas Morning regardless of when we go to Mass. But, this year we are going to change that, because the kids are old enough to put their collective feet down and tell mrangelmeg that since we have to go to Christmas morning Mass (angelbaby is serving and I am Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion ) they want to open presents on Christmas eve so that they can sleep in an extra few minutes on Christmas Morning before they have to get up to get ready for Mass.
22. Most annoying thing about this time of year? This post should explain that.
23. What I love most about Christmas? The Incarnation. God loved us so much that he came to be with us in a way that made it possible for us to reach out and come into physical contact with the Cloud of Unknowing. But God came not in majesty but in very humble circumstances. It is this living mystery wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger that makes every other annoying hassle of this season worth the effort.

Immaculate Conception Meme
Really this should be called 8 Random facts meme but since this is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception we get to give it a tonier name. Wooo us.

1. I used to sing in an a capella Women's Jazz octet called Always in Treble
2. I really hate Brussel Sprouts, even the smell turns my stomach
3. mrangelmeg and I get along pretty well when it comes to most things but out biggest disagreement has to do with this man. I really don't like him at all. Mrangelmeg is such a fan of the team he is more forgiving.
4. I have a 6 degrees of separation type connection to Pat Conroy, the author. His Uncle, Fr. Jim Conroy was a college pal of my dad (they were both Chicago boys) and spent many a Saturday afternoon on our couch drinking beer and watching football when I was a child.
5. A few years ago someone actually Googled me, and contacted me to find out if she could get permission to use an article I had written for the Internet in her parish bulletin . How cool is that?
6. We still celebrate St. Nicholas day on December 6th, complete with candy and little presents in our shoes . In fact 25 years ago that is how I received my engagement ring; I had left a pair of shoes at mrangelmeg's parent's house over Thanksgiving break and had to return to school but he had an extra week off because his quarter was over. He returned to town on St. Nicholas day and brought my shoes to my apartment. He said that St. Nicholas had left something in my shoe, it was my engagement ring in its box. (isn't that romantic?)
7. I have become obsessed with Brain Age. I play every day. I wish I could say that my Brain was 20 years old but at least it isn't 20 years older than my real age anymore.
8. I bruise easily, in the summer it isn't as noticeable because I usually have a bit of color, in the winter I just look clumsy with tons of bruises on pasty white skin.

40 Reasons to Have Children
So there is a meme going around the Catholic Internet and all these wonderful moms are waxing nostalgic and getting all spiritual about why they went and had kids. I thought this was just the kind of meme that I needed to let off steam and prepare me to complete my philosophy essay for my gradual school final.
So, in a nutshell this is (as best I can remember, it has been nearly 24 years since we started cookin' the first little varmint) why mrangelmeg and I had kids.
Nota: This is post should be taken tongue in cheek. It in no way is the only reason that himself and I decided to have children, I am sure that somewhere deep in our hearts way back 25 years ago we had much purer motives, but we were much younger then.
1. tax deductions, we get one for each kid we have (cha-ching)
2. swollen legs, hemorrhoids, a weak bladder and stretch marks are all the rage as signs of beauty or haven't you heard?
3. crawling babies clean the floor much more efficiently than those silly roomba vacuums (and we didn't have to pay shipping)
4. I don't have a lick of decorating sense, so I keep having kids and say I will decorate as soon as the kids move away (I am good well past 2025 woo hoo)
5. little kids are better than Comedy Central when it comes to making us laugh.
6. If we hadn't had kids I would have never seen a wet hamster.
7. kids are the best BS meter on the planet, they can spot a phony a mile away, especially when it is a parent so it keeps us really honest
8. I love to read, although if I had to choose I might not have chosen to read One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish for the three-thousand-four-hundred-ninety fifth-time last night, I suppose its a good thing no body's counting.
9. kids are one of the best reasons for having an after dinner drink (or two, or more)
10. since himself isn't very social the fact that we take up an entire pew in church suits him hust fine.
11. who needs vacations, when the kids want excitement we just have them switch bedrooms. Now that is as exciting as any amusement park you have to pay money to get into.
12. Kids little toys, especially Lego's make really good exercise equipment. If you accidentally step on one you hop around holding your foot for at least a half hour. That has to burn as many calories as those expensive machines they sell on television.
13. Who doesn't love kids food (probably the exact same thing every lunch for three weeks in a row even) I ask you?
14. Naps.
15. They keep your Math and English and Social Studies and Science skills sharp while you are helping them with their homework.
16. You are completely justified in buying sugar sweetened cereal (the kind with the prize inside) because your kids eat it -- yeah right!
17. You are completely justified in going to the animated movie that all the kids are going to, because you have to take your kids.
18. Have you seen all the cool toys they make now? (I suppose that is a dad's reason.)
19. live in excuse to go out for ice cream?
20. I'm playing with the kids is the greatest excuse for not doing whatever it is you are supposed to be doing.
21. Who doesn't want to spend an entire weekend at the baseball (basketball/soccer/volleyball/football) field, those concession stand nachos are just yummy.
23. My lifelong ambition was to be the ten year president of the elementary school PTO, really it was.
24. Surviving another year of the first grade Christmas Pageant makes you realize that sanity is relative, and probably fleeting.
26. liberals with no kids reduce, reuse, and recycle to be trendy. People with kids are trendy out of necessity cool.
28. If you can put together a tricycle at 3 o'clock in the morning after having had dinner with the in-laws and taken two cranky children to midnight mass without going insane you can conquer the world.
29. Getting fifteen minutes to yourself, even if it means having to lock the bathroom door and stuff toilet paper in your ears and hum as loud as you can, is worth it when you see how happy their little faces are when you finally come out.
30. eventually they actually get old enough to help you do housework.
31. they even get old enough to help mow the lawn, although you have to be sure to cut the blocks big enough so that their little feet reach the pedals on the rider.
32. who needs disposable income, we'd only get into trouble if we had money to waste on things. kids take care of all that extra income really efficiently.
33. Little girls grow up and legitimize my devoted husbands growing collection of firearms (to show to potential dates).
34. Eventually they get old enough to get their drivers license and you can make them take their brothers and sisters places in order to get the use of the car. Now that is a great reason.
35. Trick or Treat candy taxes. (don't tell me you don't take them up in your house, and if you don't you are welcome to the suggestion)
36. So that we could populate the world with children who would grow up loving Monty Python and Mel Brooks Movies, duh.
37. Because the bible tells us to be fruitful and multiply and it sounded a lot more fun than just adding.
38. Because who needs to sleep through the night anyway? When they are little they can't sleep and when they get old enough to go on dates you can't sleep.
39. Because retiring young is for wimps.
40. Because we know what it takes to make them and we enjoy the process thoroughly.

B.R.A meme, Are you Thinking What I am Thinking?
Okay, so I will have to admit that when my friend and alumnus of my Gradual School Paul sent me a comment saying he was going to "hit me with the BRA meme" my first thought was does his wife know that he plays with bras. Maybe I am tired, or maybe The Christian Faith in the Doctrinal Documents of the Catholic Church which I have been perusing today to see what I can use in my essays has finally pushed me over the edge.
I am honored that he has chosen to put me in the company of the other bloggers he wrote about, even if he did get a few details wrong (I live in south central Indiana, not northern, and I am actually an MA candidate not an MTS)
That being said, and really needing something to distract me after an entire day with Neuner and Dupuis (see above) I will gladly play along.

Adoro te devote I came across this blog through a fortuitous link from another blog. I have been a loyal reader ever since that first visit. With deeply personal reflections on work, life and pets, she is a real inspiration to me. She is just beginning her Masters work as I am ending mine albeit at different Gradual Schools. I wish her much luck and encouragement on her journey.
Ironic Catholic My week would not be complete without a stop at this wonderful blog that is part religious truth part total LOL funny sarcasm. I have been a loyal reader for a long time now and am in awe of her wit and wisdom. If you haven't read her 100 Ironic reasons to be Catholic (in groups of ten) it is worth an afternoon of checking her archives.
. . .And I Let Myself be Duped is the blog of Mark Mossa SJ, a Jesuit Scholastic who has been chronicling his life and studies for the priesthood. I count Mark as a very dear friend that I have never actually met in person; but hope to someday. He has always had a word of encouragement or some other helpful tidbit (like the paper on Substance he sent me when I was suffering through taking my first ever philosophy class was like a lifeline in a very stormy sea.
Martha Martha is another of my earliest finds in the Blogosphere. Penni is so openly honest about her joys and struggles with her faith that she reminds me that we are all still "working out our salvation with fear and trembling.: She has possibly the most visually stunning site of anyone I know on the Internet. A few months of reading her posts is like an adult education class in Art Appreciation. Not to mention all of the scripture and inspirational posts she includes.
And finally but in no way least:
Maior autem his est caritas is the blog of Gashwin Gomes (not his real name). This is a gentleman who was raised in India but is currently a resident of the American South. Of late his blog has been an amazing travelogue that makes my head spin (me who has never left the North American Continent save a three month diversion in Hawaii at 13). He has chronicled the illness and death of his father in a way that is deeply moving. Not only is he one of my regular reads, he is in my daily prayers.
Five is entirely too few choices for this kind of award, but I will leave all my other blogger pals to the mercy of God.

I've Been Tagged: 8 things meme
Gashwin tagged me with a meme
I honestly can't remember if I have done this one before. And since I even got a special email invitation to do it (I think he is trying to get my mind off of my troubles by sending me things to do that don't involve either Philosophy or thinking about my mom for a while. I am so grateful to him for the stress reliever.

At the end of the post, the player then tags 8 people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know that they have been tagged and asking them to read your blog."
1. I am one of nine children (6 girls, three boys). I have one brother and three sisters who live her in the Midwest with me, but the rest of my family is spread across the country from Arizona to Florida to Pennsylvania and then our one brother is presently living in Spain. I wish I talked to them all more but I am not the best at keeping in touch.
2. I write in journals. This is a trait I got from my mother who has always kept a journal for as long as I can remember. I was going through some of her papers the other day and found one of her journal entries on the back of some junk mail. She carefully preserved it. I am thinking about transcribing it here on my blog because she is a wonderful writer and this particular entry is filled with insight on how to live in the moment and not second guessing the past or worrying about the future.
3. I am still taking piano lessons. I don't play well but I have only been taking them for about a year and a half. At least now I can read the bass clef scale now if I could only get my fingers to play the notes I read.
4. I am slightly dyslexic. It shows up mostly as discalculia which means that I often transpose numbers, not the best thing to have happen when balancing a checkbook.
It often happens as I am typing as well but thanks to spell check my efforts don't come off as totally incomprehensible.
5. I used to play golf with my dad when I was little -- meaning he would let me hit from the T and then hit twice on the fairway and if I wasn't on the green yet I picked up my ball and dropped it on the green. Then I got to putt three times. If I didn't make it in the hole I would pick up my ball again. It was a great way to learn golf, but I hadn't played in years when I met mrangelmeg, and had to relearn to play if I wanted to spend any time with him in the summer months. I am (as you may have read this summer) doing not too badly for someone who never actually took a lesson. I do enjoy the game. I may have actually played as often as mrangelmeg this summer. He doesn't get as much play time as he used to get.
6. Sadly, I can't speak another language. I could kick myself for not taking a language in college or high school but I had other priorities then. Now I am trying to learn Spanish and not getting very far on my own.
7. I'm still trying to discern what it is God wants me to do with my soon to be earned Master's Degree. I have been listening for some "movement of the Spirit" but as yet I haven't heard much in the way of direction. So I wait and pray and hope that when I do feel the Spirit move I will be willing to do whatever I am asked. Until then I wait and pray. I have often said that in the words of that great theologian Tom Petty "the Waiting is the hardest part."
8. In just over a month (October 10 to be exact) mrangelmeg and I will celebrate the 25th anniversary of our first date. I was telling someone the other day that I can remember clearly the night I realized I was in love with him. It was when he was away for the weekend and I wasn't going to see him until Sunday evening or Monday depending on how late a start he got from home. I looked around my apartment and his presence was there; a flannel shirt he had left there one night because the weather had turned unseasonably warm; the mountain dew in the refrigerator; a piece of paper that had fallen out of a notebook of his with his handwriting on it (class notes or lab notes or something). I started to wonder about the future and couldn't imagine a future for myself that didn't include him. Looking back on what we have lived through I can't imagine having done some of the things I have done in my life without having him by my side (including my Master's Degree). So, here's to reminiscing about the past 25 years together and planning for the next 25.

It was when he was away for the weekend and I wasn't going to see him until Sunday evening or Monday depending on how late a start he got from home. I looked around my apartment and his presence was there; a flannel shirt he had left there one night because the weather had turned unseasonably warm; the mountain dew in the refrigerator; a piece of paper that had fallen out of a notebook of his with his handwriting on it (class notes or lab notes or something). I started to wonder about the future and couldn't imagine a future for myself that didn't include him. Looking back on what we have lived through I can't imagine having done some of the things I have done in my life without having him by my side (including my Master's Degree). So, here's to reminiscing about the past 25 years together and planning for the next 25.

Favorite Catholic Blogs Meme
The Ironic Catholic has honored me with a tag as one of her favorite Catholic Blogs. I am humbled. Especially because of the company in which I find myself.
I am now supposed to tag a few other people whose blogs I find inspire my Catholic faith.
I will do that by pointing you to a few friends you might not know. And one I am sure you do, but must not go unheralded.
God'sbody is one of my favorite places to find a literate take on what is going on in the world. Not to mention "Today in porn".
The Speakin' Deacon is the creation of my pal from Gradual School, Deacon John Simmons of the Diocese of Louisville. This is where he posts his homilies. The only thing more awesome than this would be if he were to make audio files of his homilies and create a podcast of them because they are great to read but I tell you, the man can preach!!!
God Spede ye Plough is the blog of another alum from my gradual school. He has an interesting view of the church. I may not always agree with his position, but it reminds me that our faith tradition is big enough for all of us.
Sincerely My Thoughts is the creation of one of my dearest soul friends. She is as close as a sister to me and in fact our sons are adopted brothers (it is a long story and involves the fact that neither of them has a natural living brother in a sea of seven girl siblings between them, so out of desperation they have chosen each other) Suzanne's blog is a mix of the simple joy of daily Catholic life and the beauty of being other centered. I don't miss a day of checking in to see what is going on in her world.
I think I will leave it at that. So to those I have tagged consider yourself part of my "daily devotion".

KM Culinary Meme
This one comes from The Kitchen Madonna1. What food does your best friend not like?
She isn't a big fan of eggs.
2. What is your favorite cookbook?
I have one that is a Food Writers Favorite Deserts that I absolutely love. Sadly because of my wheat and corn allergies now there are darn few things in it that I can actually eat.
3. Are you more of a sushi person or a lamb person?
Lamb, cooked and seasoned well beats raw fish any day of the week.
4. Given a choice of something fried and salty or something baked and sweet, what would you choose?
Oh man, give me fried and salty about half of the month. I an not at all a cake person though. My sweet tooth runs more to really good quality chocolates.
5. Do you buy whole chickens and boil them and pick the meat off or does that gross you out? Do your children know what a whole chicken looks like or do they think t hey are made up of four breasts?
Of course my kids know what a whole chicken looks like, It looks like the one that comes in the deli tray from Kroger where I get my grilled whole Chicken. I have never in my life cooked a whole chicken, but then again I have never in my life fried chicken either. I am more of a IQF (individually quick frozen) chicken breast portions kind of cook.
6. How do you feel about butter, sour cream, cream cheese, and half and half?
I am into whole foods, so I prefer real butter and real cream and sour cream rather than margarine or fake stuff. I love good quality sauces. Especially because I am allergic to so many things.
7. (Skip this question if you are a vegetarian) If you are a carnivore, would you be willing to hunt or butcher your meat? Or to watch someone do that for you or would you rather not think of it? Or are you grateful for the animal who gave its life to sustain your life?
I fully understand that some animal gave its life for my meal and am grateful for that fact. But I believe that God intended for it to be that way. If God had wanted me to be a vegetarian he wouldn't have made cows out of steak and pigs out of ham and bacon!!! I do draw the line at hunting and processing the meat, I leave that to the experts. Heck I barely even cook the stuff.
8. What is the most exotic ingredient or spice in your cupboard?
I have some really exotic grains in my cupboard, like quinoa, and spelt, amaranth and millet because of my allergy to wheat and corn. I actually cook with them, on occasion as a change from rice and potato flour. Sadly I don't know enough about cooking to really do anything with them, but I do own them. I suppose I am hoping some day the cooking elves will come in and make something wonderful while I am sleeping.
So there you go. Now you know that I love to eat but hate to cook. What a shock!
